The history of the Hokkaido University goes back to 1876 when Sapporo Agricultural College was founded as the first higher educational institution in Japan. The principle beliefs of our university introduced back then were based on a Pioneering Spirit cultivating an international appreciation, Liberalism, and Applied Learning. In 2001 we celebrated the 125 Anniversary of our university and we all reconfirmed that the beliefs we adhered to 125 years ago have become even more meaningful in today's world.
The Hokkaido University now consists of 12 faculties, 15 graduate schools, and 23 research institutes and centers. The number of academic staff in the university is estimated at 700 professors, 650 associate professors, 120 lecturers and 670 instructors. The University has a student enrollment of 11 000 at the undergraduate level and 6 000 at graduate level. The university has International Exchange Programs Committee for international cooperation on academic activities, international student exchange, and other various university international exchange programs. International students constitute a vital and integral part of the university community. Our doors are open to all scholars who dare to pioneer the frontiers of research, and to all students who are willing to pursue their individual interests in learning.
